Complete Guide to La Zenia

La Zenia is a development located on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean, at the southernmost point in the province of Alicante and only 8 km south of the port town Torrevieja. This area has established itself as a renowned holiday destination, especially in peak summer, attracting tourists with its quality beaches and a wealth of first-class facilities.

Population and Urban Development

Although La Zenia has fewer than two thousand registered residents, its popularity grows exponentially in the summer months, with the number of tourists and seasonal visitors doubling. Despite its small size of only 1.9 km² with luxury properties by the beach, the urban development stands out by offering a high quality of life in an apparently limited area.

La Zenia

Location

La Zenia falls under the jurisdiction of the Municipality of Orihuela, which provides essential municipal services such as waste collection and maintenance of public areas. The location is compact and borders Playa Flamenca to the north, the coastal district Cabo Roig to the south, and Los Dolses to the west, situated in the heart of Orihuela Costa.

Thanks to excellent connectivity, the main coastal road, N-332, runs through La Zenia from north to south, making it easy to access the AP-7 motorway, which runs parallel to the coast. This motorway offers a free connection south to Murcia or a faster toll route north to Alicante and beyond. Additionally, La Zenia is well connected with air transport, with Alicante Airport less than an hour’s drive north and Región Murcia Airport in Corvera about a 45-minute drive away.

History

La Zenia emerged as a holiday destination following the opening of Villamartín Golf Club in 1972. The urban development began shortly after with the construction of the Servigroup La Zenia hotel in 1974, located on a cliff that separates the two main beaches. In 1979, the Orihuela Costa Resort opened, occupying a large part of the area in front of the beach and today offers tennis courts, a large outdoor pool, and accommodation in large private gardens.

The Zenia Boulevard shopping center, which opened in 2012, transformed the area by adding world-class commercial facilities. Today, this is the largest shopping center in the province of Alicante with 150 stores, a wide variety of restaurants from fast food to gourmet, and free parking for over 5,000 vehicles.

Geography and Climate

La Zenia is characterized by a low and relatively flat topography, typical of most coastal areas on the Mediterranean. The close proximity to the sea provides fresh breezes in the summer and mild, generally dry winters. The area’s healthy Mediterranean climate benefits from low annual rainfall, an average sunshine of 325 days a year, and an average annual temperature of 19.3°C.

Summers in La Zenia are long and hot with temperatures ranging between 25°C at night and 35°C during the day, while winters are short, mild, and dry. The proximity to Torrevieja’s salt mines to the north and the absence of heavy industry contribute to a particularly clean environment with excellent air quality enriched with natural iodine, which is said to help reduce the effects of chronic health issues such as cardiovascular disease, rheumatism, and skin conditions.

La Zenia Beach

Despite its size, La Zenia offers a wide range of services and excellent public transport connections that connect the community with nearby villages and towns, including regular services to Torrevieja in the north.

The area has two excellent beaches with white sand and traditional Spanish beach bars, serving informal dinners and full bar service for light snacks.
