Canelobre Caves, a Must-See in Alicante

The Canelobre Caves are one of the most fascinating destinations to visit in the Alicante province. This spectacular karst complex is located 700 meters above sea level on the side of the Sierra del Cabeçó d’Or mountain in the town of Busot, just 23 km from Alicante and 180 km from Valencia.

The visit is guided and lasts about an hour. It begins with walking through a 45-meter-long tunnel carved out of the rock, leading to an impressive hall of 80,000 m², the only accessible part for the public. However, there are also restricted areas reserved for speleology.

Inside the caves, you’ll find one of the largest vaulted ceilings in Spain with a height of 70 meters. Water and rock have created spectacular formations such as stalactites, stalagmites, jellyfish, and columns that enchant visitors.

The exact origin of the caves is unknown, but they are often attributed to the Arabs. During the Spanish Civil War, the Republican faction used the caves as a workshop for aircraft repairs, and it was at that time that the current access tunnel was opened. Some damage from that period is still visible.
